Kathal Movie On Netflix (2023) Review: Great Combo of Eccentricities, Dark Comedy & Socio-Political Stigmas

Kathal movie on Netflix review

Kathal, the latest Hindi comedy movie on Netflix is released on May 19 2023 and has stricken gold since its mark on India’s popular OTT. Directed by Yashowardhan Mishra and produced by ALT Balaji duo, Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, Kathal is a tight slap to the orthodox, apathetic and tightly corrupted society.

The name is very much self-explanatory and is about the theft of two prized jackfruits from the garden of a local politician in a small town in Madhya Pradesh, India. The feudal power of politicians can be vehemently seen throughout the story when the politician orders the local police force to embark on a mission to find the Kathal bandit.

Movie On Netflix Connected With Reality!

Kathal is a purely fictional work, and this is what I thought before watching it. During the show, the behaviour of the MLA sounded utterly nonsense, but with the power of curiosity within, I researched a bit and found a similar case of JD(U) MP Mahendra Prasad whose two kathals were stolen from his 4 Tughlaq Road bungalow in 2014. Ergo, we can say that when we talk about India, sometimes, the line between fiction and non-fiction becomes so sheer and semipermeable that it is hard to identify in which world you’re breathing.

What’s The Gist Then?

Kathal – A jackfruit mystery waiting to be solved.

The complete plot is captured in a small town of Uttar Pradesh, India, where all the hiccups are given as usual by a politician, MLA Munnalal Pateria, which is vehemently played by Vijay Raaz. This time, it is about his two Uncle Hong kathals, which he imported from Malaysia, having been stolen. Now these kathals are not just kathals but, played a crucial role to wet the beak of someone in higher command. Unfortunately gone missing at such a crucial time, and he puts the town’s complete police force in chaos.

Mahima, a hardworking and adamant policewoman played by Sanya Malhotra has been given the duty to solve the jackfruit theft case from a local politician’s house. Sanya Malhotra’s acting was on the point in this Netflix movie and other supporting characters Rajpal Yadav (News reporter Anuj Sanghvi), Anant V Joshi (constable Saurabh Dwivedi), Gurpal Singh (SP Angrez Singh Randhawa), and Neha Saraf (constable Kunti Parihar) were like perfect portions of spices to make a finger licking kathal dish.

As unique as its name, Kathal, the latest Hindi movie on Netflix has a lot to offer behind the smokescreen of Kathal theft.

A Dark Satire For Indian Comedy Mood

The complete movie mirrored many left-out issues that are taking dust, sitting at the back of government offices. Apart from finding the kathal thief or thieves, the various punches of squibs have been seen widely seen on screen from time to time. Be it an unsolved case of a stolen pink Nano car of a constable or hundreds of missing girls’ cases’ from the same town, Kathal has concentrated on many social issues that exist in modern India as well.

Kathal embarks on a mission to discuss many underlying social stigmas.

Mahima propelled forward with her army and wit to solve the case, instead finding many other underlying issues. She fails to understand or would be more appropriate to say, is bamboozled by how women portray a diminutive character of a girl, just because she wears ripped jeans, chatters a lot and belongs to a lower caste, just like our Heroine – Mahima Basor. Our main protagonist also experiences a sheer yet innate level of hatred from the illiterate politician, a village person, other constables and her beau, constable Saurabh Dwivedi’s father. Due to her social strata, she thought that her higher position as compared to her lover is somehow troubling her dream to marry Saurabh. Ergo, she commends SP Angrez Singh Randhawa to promote her beau instead of her to equalize their professional strata. The character of Saurabh Dwivedi is beautifully written as the person denies such inequality and distribution of the caste system and gracefully supports his girl throughout the play.

Kathal Latest Hindi Movie On Netflix – Skip It or Binge It?

The underlying issues of untouchability, girl child, the sexually abusive environment at offices faced by women, lower caste hatred, outlawed acts of politicians and our craptacular law system have been touched upon so creatively. Throughout the prowess of acting, the script doesn’t feel boring at any point. It is for sure, that you will be hooked till the very end.

The witty and hilarious writing of Ashok Mishra and Yashowardhan Mishra along with the experienced cinematography of Harshvir Oberai is a spot in this Netflix presentation. Kathal is an excellent family comedy movie on Netflix that should be watched with hot-to-trot popcorns and cold on feet, slushies.

Find out – Can Mahima, a decorated police officer, find the culprit behind the jackfruit theft, missing girls and the pink Nano of constable Pandey ji?
