Netflix’s Kaos Season 1 dropped on screens on 29 August 2024, and the topic and the dystopian swirl of Greek mythology with a dash of truth (what’s written in the book) instantly captivated audiences all around the Earth. Its modern take on Greek mythology definitely won’t go unnoticed by the Gods.
Created by Charlie Covell (the creator of (The End of the F***ing World), directed by extremely talented Georgi Banks-Davies and Runyararo Mapfumo and starring globally well-known names such as Jeff Goldblum, Janet McTeer, Cliff Curtis, David Thewlis among many in the list of this Netflix series, KAOS has created complete chaos in the Underworld, Purgatory, on Earth and Olympus. Juggling up their emotions and standing on the verge of the cliff, humans and other beings were seen just as mere puppets in Gods’ shows. Unfortunately, the gods in Kaos seemed more like humans, abundantly filled with emotions and bodily needs, which otherwise is very unlike wise of such higher creatures.
One thing that awkwardly intrigued me is the name of the Netflix series – ‘Kaos.’ Why Kaos and not Chaos?
The spelling ‘Kaos’ could also be a nod to the Greek etymology of the Greek word “chaos” (χάος), from which the English term derives. This stylization, once you know the pronunciation of the Greek “chaos”, makes the title feel more rooted in Greek mythology but with a modern twist.
In this reimagined universe, the gods are not just rulers of the cosmos but are plagued by insecurities, dysfunctional family dynamics, and strange power struggles. The complete plot of Kaos revolves around a prophecy – “A line appears, the order wanes, the family falls, and Kaos reigns.”
This latest Netflix series is loaded with godly plot twists, and while many questions are answered, some of the biggest mysteries remain unsolved, leaving fans eagerly awaiting a potential second season.
So, before gearing up for KAOS Season 2, you should know Netflix KAOS Season 1 – 9 Biggest Unsolved Mysteries In Jeff Goldblum’s Series.
1. Where Are the Other Gods In Kaos Season 1?
While Kaos prominently features Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, and a few other well-known gods like Dionysus, and Medusa, several significant figures in the Greek pantheon are conspicuously absent.
Where are gods like Ares, Apollo, or Athena? Given how interconnected the Greek gods are in mythology, their absence feels deliberate. Kaos could be teasing that they may play pivotal roles in future seasons – in Kaos Season 2.
This mystery deepens when considering the show’s narrative which hints at a dysfunctional and splintered Olympus, with many gods seemingly missing from action.
Could they have distanced themselves from Zeus’ increasing paranoia? Or are they being held back for an explosive reveal later on in the Kaos series?
The call from Hera at the end of the series sounds like the latter!
2. Who Did Hera Call at the End of the Series?
In the gripping final moments of the season, Hera makes a mysterious phone call that is quite tantalizing, keeping the viewers on their toes. The identity of the person on the other end of the line is never revealed, but the context suggests he or she is someone with considerable power like Ares.
Hera says “Darling, it’s mommy. Gather the troops. And make up the spare bed.”
Who can truly rally the troops and seize the reins of war? My bet is on Ares – the not-so-popular God of War.
It’s funny and I cannot unsee it that in Wonder Woman, David Thewlis played Ares and here he represented the anxious and more timid Hades, God of the Underworld. Most probably the Kaos Season 2 would choose a more hotheaded and young face for the role.
This unanswered question adds layers to Hera’s already complex character and sets the stage for further political intrigue on Olympus.
3. Does Dionysus Actually Fall In Love With Ariadne?
Dionysus is portrayed as the rebellious, timid yet carefree son of Zeus. Born from the womb of a human, Dionysus seems to have kind emotions and is more inclined towards the human lot.
His inner conflict to choose the righteous path brings self-consciousness, preparing him for the slow yet stronger defiance against Zeus. He (or Zeus made him) saw Ari’s revolt against his father, Minos and his bound trust in God and fate, leading her to kill him in the end. While others furiously gawked at the situation, Dionysus seemed satisfied and empowered by the action of Ari, muttering, “I think, I’m in Love.”
In the closing montage, Dionysus is seen standing in front of the Crete palace, where Ari makes a peace truce with the Trojans and now rules as the new leader. Kaos shows his internal turmoil about whether to support the gods or humanity as he holds the half-filled bottle of Meander water that Zeus gave him and glances between the bottle and the castle.
Could this potential love story signal a shift in his character arc? Or is this relationship doomed to be another example of the gods toying with mortals for their own amusement?
4. How Did Minos Remain Unaware of His First Child Until The End?
One of the biggest twists in Kaos revolves around Minos and the mystery of his first child. For 90% of the season, Minos remained unaware of which of his children was the first, destined to bring about his downfall. His prophecy that haunted him throughout the series, made him more maniac than tactful.
It isn’t until the final moments that the truth is revealed, but the question remains—how could a king as powerful as Minos be so in the dark about his own family?
This plot point raises questions about fate and prophecy, central themes in Kaos. Was Minos deliberately kept in the dark by someone (his wife) seeking to control his destiny? The eventual reveal only scratches the surface of this complex family drama, leaving a bigger surface to be touched in future episodes of Kaos Season.
5. Will Dionysus Reveal To Riddy & Orpheus – Zeus killed Dennis?
Dennis, a sweet and calm black cat, meets a tragic end when Zeus kills him, leaving us shocked, grieving and agitated. However, the two characters closest to Dennis—Riddy and Orpheus remain unaware of Zeus’ role in his death. The reason seems more stupid and apathetic, perfect to build concrete tension between Zeus and Dionysus.
So, will tell them the truth?
Revealing the truth could lead to further chaos, perhaps even igniting a rebellion against Zeus. On the other hand, staying silent preserves the fragile status quo on Olympus. But one thing is for sure – Future episodes will surely bring more Kaos for us to enjoy.
6. Who or What Are the Bell Boys On Olympus in Kaos Season 1?
Throughout Kaos, viewers are introduced to the enigmatic Bell Boys – beings who serve on Olympus but remain shrouded in mystery. Their purpose, origin, and powers are never fully explained, although they bleed, feel fear and are treated as disposable by Zeus (especially). So, are they mere servants?
Theories abound regarding their true nature. Are they lesser gods, demigods, or perhaps mortals cursed to serve the Olympians?
After seeing them being served pathetically by Zeus, some critical thinkers suggested they be used for grander scheme(s) in future.
7. How Did Caeneus Gain the Power of Soul Renewal?
Caeneus is a mortal who gains extraordinary power to renew souls at the end of the season, standing out as one of the most unique and powerful characters in Kaos. However, the show offers little explanation for how he acquired this ability. Is his power a gift from the Titans, or is there a darker, more complicated origin story at play?
Given the significance of souls in both Greek mythology and the plot of Kaos Season 1, understanding the source of Caeneus’ power could unlock deeper secrets about the show’s universe. His ability raises philosophical questions about life, death, and the role of mortals in the gods’ plans.
8. How Did Anatole’s Wife Know Orpheus Kill Her Husband?
One of the most intriguing revelations in Kaos is how Anatole’s wife seems to know that Orpheus killed her husband, Anatole while crossing Styx.
The story of their fate started from “The Cave,” a place where mortals are allowed to go to the Underworld to bring back their loved ones (s). Orpheus is brought to “The Cave” by Dionysus, to win passage into the Underworld by making an impression on the judges. Lachesis, one of the fates, rules Orpheus out because he took Riddy’s coin. But later she allows him to give them passage through the Underworld in return for Zeus’ watch.
Anatole wants this chance to bring back his child. And this is how Orpheus got a chance to travel with to travel with him. He also promised his wife to care for him as she has no one else now. But later Anatole gets killed in a tiff with Orpheus as Charon demands that he can only take one person beyond, creating a sudden fight between the two. After realizing the mark on his hand, Charon murders Anatole, saving Orpheus for the greater good.
But still, how did Anatole’s wife get to know this drama?
This raises several questions. Was she informed by a god? Or maybe the truth came to her through the whispers of Olympus’ bell boys or the Fates! God knows!
9. How Could Zeus Kill The Fates?
Zeus’ murder of the Fates is one of the most shocking moments in Kaos.
The Fates are the weavers of destiny in Greek mythology, supposedly above even the gods. The fact that Zeus could kill them raises serious questions about his power and the natural order in this universe.
How was it possible for him to end beings that were, by all accounts, untouchable?
This may point to Zeus creating an imbalance in Nature, inciting more chaos in the future.
Adding Two Cents – Netflix Kaos Season 1!
Jeff Goldblum’s Kaos Season 1 has provided a satisfying dose of cosmic drama, dark humour, and mythological intrigue. The super anxious Zeus though not venerated a Greek hero, has kept the audience engaged throughout Kaos Season 1 as a tightrope walker. Now it’s time to see if we can see fresh chaotic characters, able to match the electrifying character of Zeus and give a tough play in his own game – Narcissism.
The series brilliantly balances the gods’ dysfunctional, soap-operatic lives with the more existential struggles of the mortals. And it’s precisely these dangling plot threads that add to the allure. The unanswered questions in Kaos Season 1 are sure to keep fans speculating until the next season drops.
Is Kaos Season 2 Coming?
Only Atropos, Lachesis, and Clotho can answer this question.
Netflix has not given any official statement yet if we can see Kaos season 2 in the future.
Although Kaos is receiving favorable reviews from critics, Netflix may rest comfortably that the show’s creative team is a winning one. However, the show’s commercial performance will also need to support this assertion. Charlie Covell, the creator of the series, shared with Radio Times that he envisions a trilogy, planning a total of 3 seasons. Although the overarching storyline for future seasons is outlined, Covell revealed that the scripts are still in development stages, with the team currently working from preliminary notes and ideas. He expressed a strong interest in expanding beyond these initial plans if possible.
Stay tuned and we will surely keep this page updated to keep the Kaos in control 😉
